An Evening of Short Plays will be offered by student performers and directors at Utah State University at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24 and Saturday, Oct. 25. LOGAN – The Play Reading Series by the Theatre Arts Department of Utah State University will continue at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24 with An Evening of Short Plays.

The four offerings that evening will be brief plays directed and performed as readings by the university’s current Theatre Arts students.

The plays will be read live without additional elements like sets or lighting, focusing the audience’s attention strictly on the story.

The evenings’ agenda will start with Triangle by Ashley Patterson, directed by Liz Marigoni. It’s a short drama about America’s deadliest industrial disaster, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in 1911.

The Appointment by Darrin Ingram will follow, directed by Katie Ludlow. The play concerns a troubled teen and a state-mandated therapist who meet for their daily session to discuss school, parents, running away, drug use and growing independence.

The third reading will be An Infinite Number of Monkeys by Dan West, directed by Brighton McDonald. This work presumably centers on the old improbable theorem that an infinite number of monkeys randomly hitting typewriter keys for an infinite amount of time would eventually produce the Complete Works of Shakespeare.

The evening will conclude with 100 Things I’ve Never Said to You by Adam Szymkowicz, directed by Gem Christiansen. It’s a drama about an assembly of teen students coming to grips with the death of a classmate.

The challenging play readings will be repeated at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25.

Admission to the scheduled play readings is free, but seating will be limited in the Black Box Theatre.

Theater-goers are also warned that the play readings will explore adult themes and topics, including strong language, mental health issues, suicide, bullying, death and fire.

Other offerings scheduled in the 2025-26 Theatre Arts season at USU include The Wickhams: Christmas at Pemberley in mid-November; The Merry Wives of Windsor by William Shakespeare in mid-February; and the musical Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in early April.

The Black Box Theatre is located in the Chase Fine Arts Center on the USU campus.
